Back in the Blue – Return of the Humpback Whales
Nature & Wildlife 52' 2025 4K
On the west coast of Canada, between the mainland and Vancouver Island, there is a remarkable development: the humpback whales are returning. Just a few decades ago, the population in the region was thought to be almost extinct. Today, the animals can be observed regularly again, accompanied by noticeable changes in the ecosystem.
Marine biologist Jackie Hildering has been documenting these developments for almost 20 years. Her work with the Marine Education & Research Society (MERS) shows how whales influence the marine balance, for example through the nutrients they bring into the water. They enrich the food chain and favour the growth of kelp forests. Species such as sea otters and seals find new habitats there.
Despite these successes, the situation remains challenging. Collisions with boats and the impact of tourism continue to pose risks. Educational work and projects such as ‘See a blow, go slow’ aim to promote harmonious coexistence between humans and animals.
The film offers insights into the fascinating underwater world and shows how research, commitment and sustainable approaches can help to create a life-friendly space for everyone involved.
